Nutritional needs for large breed dogs

If you own a large breed dog, one that weighs more than 56 pounds or 75 pounds at maturity, their demands differ from those of smaller canines. When it comes to their nutritional requirements, large breed dogs need bigger portions but it’s not about providing bigger portions, it’s about providing them with the nutrition they require to thrive.

Nutrition for Dog Joint Health

While joint health is important for every dog, larger dogs with larger frames tend to have more wear and tear on their joints than a smaller dog, for example, a chihuahua. Larger dogs also have a shorter lifespan and, in some situations, are considered seniors as soon as six years old. Always look for dog foods that provide the essential nutrition for joint health.

Glucosamine:

Glucosamine is a cartilage-building component that is commonly present in meat and poultry. To protect your dog's bones and joints, glucosamine is a great ingredient for large breeds.

If you start feeding your dog natural glucosamine from the very beginning, the dog will benefit later on in life as it supports their joints and mobility.

Eicosatetraenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA):

The most common fatty acids added to pet food are DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid). These Omega-3 fatty acids aid in the reduction of inflammation, particularly in the skin and joints.

Nutrition for Muscle and Bone Health in Dogs

Large breeds require nutrients at all stages of their life to maintain healthy muscles and bones. Two must-have healthy muscle and bone nutrition for dogs include:

Calcium:

An important mineral that can be found in calcium is yogurt, milk, and a variety of other foods. One can always buy dog food that contains calcium to strengthen their teeth and bones.

Vitamin D:

This fat-soluble vitamin allows calcium to be absorbed into the body, promoting bone tissue growth and the health of teeth, bones, and joints.
